The devil who was turned to stone.

A small cross-legged grotesque sits high in the Angel Choir of Lincoln Cathedral. The usual story says an imp caused mischief in the cathedral until an angel turned him to stone. Wikipedia says the tale was first printed by Arnold Frost in 1897. The jeweller James Ward Usher made the Imp famous with jewellery from 1890.
