The monks of Bardney at first shut out the bones of King Oswald, left overnight on a cart at their gate. Bede says a pillar of light rose from the cart to heaven. The monks took in the relics and left their doors open. In Lincolnshire 'Do you come from Bardney?' is said to people who leave doors open.
