The stone weeps blood each April.

The Leicester Mercury says Richard Smith, 20, heckled recruiting sergeant Simeon Stayne and was run through with a halberd; his gravestone is said to 'sweat blood' each April 12. A 1936 explanation blamed the iron in the stone. The council says he was murdered in the Market Place on 12 April 1727. CONFLICT: Regent Street (Mercury) vs Market Place (council).
