Pilgrims came for a phial of holy blood.

In 1270 Hailes Abbey received a relic believed to be some of Christ's blood. English Heritage says Edmund, son of Earl Richard of Cornwall, obtained it in Germany in 1268. It made the abbey a great pilgrimage site, and it was an early target of Henry VIII's Reformation.
