Churchyard south of the abbey's east end; open access.
'For Tyger fierce took life away.' Carved in a Wiltshire churchyard.
In Malmesbury Abbey churchyard a headstone remembers Hannah Twynnoy, who died on 23 October 1703 aged 33: 'For Tyger fierce took life away.' A century later the town historian said she was a servant at the White Lion Inn, where a travelling menagerie kept a tiger. She liked to tease it, despite the keeper's warnings. One day it pulled free of its fixing, caught her clothing and killed her. She is thought to be the first person killed by a tiger in Britain.
