  • Sarehole Mill
  • Near A34
  • The pin marks the spot.

The mill that became the Shire.

J.R.R. Tolkien lived close to Sarehole Mill between the ages of four and eight. Visit Warwickshire says the miller's son in white dusty clothes frightened the young Tolkien, and that the mill, its pond and lanes fed the Shire. Wikipedia quotes him calling the place 'a kind of lost paradise'. Birmingham Museums runs it as a museum.
