One man looked, and the town never forgot.

Later versions of the Godiva story say the townsfolk shut themselves indoors, but one man peeped and was struck blind or punished. British History Online says the name 'Peeping Tom' is first found in 1773, and that Pennant (1782) calls him a tailor. The Herbert says the original life-sized wooden figure once stood at the King's Head Hotel on Hertford Street and went on permanent show at the museum from 2021. The Coventry Society notes a second figure on Hertford Street, which looks the other way.
