  • DatePalm Sunday (former scouring)

A horse that had to be weeded every Palm Sunday.

A red horse was once cut into the red soil of the Edge Hill slope near Sunrising. Tradition said it marked the Earl of Warwick killing his own horse at Towton on Palm Sunday 1461 to show he would not flee; British History Online thinks the horse was much older. Our Warwickshire says the tenants had to scour it every Palm Sunday. No horse can be seen today.
