A ghost made for the visitors.
Sir Fulke Greville, the Jacobean poet who restored Warwick Castle, was stabbed by his servant Ralph Haywood in 1628 and died weeks later; his ghost is said to haunt the Watergate Tower. Our Warwickshire and Visit Warwickshire both say the ghost is first recorded in the 1920s-30s, under an earl short of money, and that the tower opened as the 'Ghost Tower' in 1973. Visit Warwickshire adds that the murder happened in London, not Warwick.
