Enough witches to pull a hay cart up the hill.

Long Compton had a name for witches: a local saying claims there were enough to drag a load of hay up Long Compton Hill. On 15 September 1875 farm labourer James Hayward, who believed local witches were spoiling his work, attacked old Ann Tennant with a pitchfork in the village, and she died. CONFLICT: the parish council gives her age as 79 and the name as Hayward; Our Warwickshire gives 80 and Haywood (its Part Two uses Hayward).
