Oulton: on wild nights a huntsman and his hounds ride out, and in the old house a white lady carries a poisoned cup.
Oulton High House, near Lowestoft, was built in 1550 by the Hobart family and by Victorian times had become a school. It was long known as the haunted house. At midnight, people believed, a wild huntsman and his hounds rode out, along with a white lady carrying a poisoned cup. The legend, printed by Walcott in 1860, says she was the wife of a roistering squire in the reign of George II. Her husband came home early from the hunt and found her flirting with an officer who was his guest, and a poisoned drink followed. The house is not open to visitors
