A coach went through Breccles' locked gates without a sound. The poacher who followed it was found dead at the door.
Dutt retells a story collected by Dr Augustus Jessopp. George Mace was a poacher and smuggler who led a gang in the Breckland. One night he and his men were coming back near Breccles Hall when a phantom coach drawn by headless horses swept past them, through the closed gates and up to the old hall, which was then empty. They followed it, but found no coach and no wheel marks. Mace swore he would discover the truth. Not long afterwards he was found dead at the hall door. There wasn't a mark on him.
