Two men nearly had the Devil's gold out of Callow Pit, until one of them opened his mouth.

Callow Pit, a water-filled hollow beside the road between Southwood and Moulton, was said to hide an iron chest of gold. Glyde tells how two men laid ladders across the water, hooked the chest's ring with a staff and began to drag it out. One of them spoke, breaking the rule of silence. A black hand rose from the water, a smell of brimstone filled the air and the Devil pulled the chest back down. Only the ring was left in their hands. They fixed it to the door of Southwood church. The Eastern Daily Press adds that a headless horseman haunts the pit.
