Marks against the dark.
In 2019 cavers found hundreds of protective marks cut into the walls of a cave at Creswell Crags. They include crossed V shapes, letters and boxes. They were meant to keep out evil spirits and had been dismissed as graffiti. The press release calls it the largest group of such marks found in Britain.
