More fools pass through Gotham.

The story says King John's road was due to cross Gotham, and every road he used became a public highway. To put him off, the villagers pretended to be mad. They tried to fence in a cuckoo and to drown an eel. The king went another way. Stapleton (1899) calls this version improbable and lists twenty printed Merry Tales.
