Coins in the plague stone.

The Broad Stone now stands outside Retford Town Hall. Tradition says that during the plague of 1665 it marked a boundary. People left money in its hollow in exchange for food, to avoid infection. Brown says it once stood south-east of the town, and markets were held around it in plague time.
