Roadside verge on a busy A60; take care. Check before you go.
The stone by the road.
In July 1817, 17-year-old Elizabeth 'Bessie' Sheppard of Papplewick was walking home from Mansfield. Charles Rotherham beat her to death with a hedge stake. A stone marks the spot on the A60, and legend says her ghost haunts that stretch of road.
