Put your ear to the well and hear the march.

A well in Dob's yard, Oundle, was said to drum like a drum beating a march before great events. Hope quotes Baxter's World of Spirits: as a schoolboy he put his head in the well and heard it, and it drummed again when Charles II died. Wikipedia notes the Talbot Hotel's Drumming Well Room is named after it.
