The Devil came to Manchester.
John Dee, the Elizabethan scholar and student of the occult, became Warden of Manchester's college in 1595. An oak table in Chetham's Audit Room has an oval burn mark in one corner. Legend says Dee summoned the Devil, who appeared over the table and left the mark of his hoof.
