A judge sat down to dinner and saw his hostess, head under her arm.

Wolfeton House near Dorchester was the home of the Trenchards. Memorials of Old Dorset tells how a judge dining there saw the figure of Lady Trenchard standing behind her own chair, her throat cut and her head under her arm. He left the house at once, and soon afterwards a messenger brought news that Lady Trenchard had killed herself. The Bournemouth Echo repeated the story in a feature on the house, still owned by a Trenchard relative. Another story says a Trenchard drove a coach up the great staircase.
