Nine stones under a beech, once a family, or girls who danced on a Sunday.
The Nine Stones is a small Bronze Age circle hidden under a beech tree beside the A35. The parish history site records several petrification legends: that the stones are the Devil, his wife and their seven children turned to stone; that the Devil owned them; or that they were children turned to stone for playing five-stones on the Sabbath. Others call them maidens punished for dancing on a Sunday. They have also been called the Nine Ladies and Lady Williams and her Dog. The parish site notes modern claims of cars breaking down beside them.
