A hunter ran his hounds through a witches' circle. The hare he chased next was a witch.

Bowerman's Nose is a stack of granite on Hayne Down above Manaton. The story says Bowerman was a hunter whose hounds burst through a coven of witches mid-ritual. In revenge a witch turned herself into a hare and led him and his pack a chase until they were exhausted. Then she turned the man to stone. His hounds became the rocks of Hound Tor nearby.
