A silver bell rang three times, and then it sank into the pool.
St Nectan's Kieve is a waterfall in a wooded glen near Trethevy, where the stream drops through a hole worn in the rock into a deep basin, the kieve. Robert Hunt tells how the hermit Nectan hung a silver bell in his chapel whose ringing warned sailors far out at sea. Dying, he rang it three times and dropped it into the pool. Two mysterious sisters buried him in a chest beneath the river bed. Long after, miners tried to blast the kieve to find the bell, but heard it ring and a voice say the child was not yet born who would recover it.
