A funfair born of temperance.
The Hoppings funfair on Newcastle's Town Moor began in 1882 as a Temperance Festival, a sober alternative during Race Week,. It remains a temperance event. The 2026 fair ran from 19 to 28 June, scaled back because of drainage works.
