She is blue, she is cold, and she waits in the pool for walkers who wander too close.
Doxey Pool is a small dark pool, about 15 by 10 metres, high on the gritstone ridge of the Roaches. It is said to be home to a water spirit or mermaid, sometimes called Jenny Greenteeth or 'the blue nymph', said by some to be a woman who fell in on a foggy day. The Staffordshire Wildlife Trust calls the pool allegedly haunted by a mermaid who lures travellers in. Derbyshire Folklore quotes a 1949 sighting by Florence Pettit and reports the belief that Doxey Pool and Black Mere on Morridge are connected underground. The pool was fenced in 2023–24.
