A trumpet sounded three times, and Roman soldiers marched out of the cellar wall.
Treasurer's House stands behind York Minster and belongs to the National Trust. Its best-known ghost story begins in February 1953, when Harry Martindale, a young apprentice heating engineer, was working in the cellar. He heard a trumpet blast three times, then saw the helmet of a Roman soldier coming through the solid wall. A soldier on horseback followed, then about twenty more, two abreast. They were visible only from the knees up, walking on the old Roman ground level below the floor. The National Trust says only a handful of people have seen them, and that a guest of Frank Green had reported one earlier.
