Every tunnel in Wallasey, they say, ran back to Mother Redcap's door.

Mother Redcap's was a small white stone house on the shore at Egremont, Wallasey, built in 1595 according to the Liverpool Echo. It became an inn known by several names, among them the Halfway House and Seabank Nook. Mother Redcap, whose real name is given as Poll Jones, kept smugglers' loot for a fee and a share of the profits. Legend says hidden tunnels all over Wallasey led back to her inn. A wooden vane outside was said to be turned to warn smugglers about the authorities. The house was demolished in 1974. In 1927 E. C. Woods drew on old notes about the house and Mother Redcap herself.
