The moor won back.

In the 1870s the lord of the manor, the Rev. W. A. Duckworth, blocked paths to keep people off Darwen Moor. Locals led by a coal deliverer cleared them again and again. After a long fight the moor was opened in September 1896, and the Jubilee Tower was built to celebrate, opening in 1898.
