The king knighted the beef.

James I stayed at Hoghton Tower in August 1617. The story says he was so pleased with a joint of beef that he knighted it 'Sir Loin'. Historians and the BBC say the word sirloin is older, from French 'sur longe' (above the loin), and the tale is also told of Elizabeth I and Charles II.
