Two brothers, two sides of the Civil War, one staircase. Only one of them came down it alive.
Tappington Hall is an old farmhouse in the valley near Denton, the home of Richard Barham's family and the setting of his comic 'Spectre of Tappington'. Harper tells a darker local story. During the Civil War two brothers lived here, one a Cavalier and one for Parliament. They hated each other so much they lived in separate parts of the house and shared only the main staircase. One night they met on the stairs, and the Puritan brother stabbed the Cavalier in the back. Harper says the farming family living there showed visitors the stain it left.
