A saint and the Devil each threw a stone. Only one of them landed standing.

On the hillside above Mottistone stand two stones: an upright about 4 metres tall and a fallen one about 2.9 metres long. They are the remains of a Neolithic long barrow, later used as a meeting place or moot. Visit Isle of Wight tells the legend that St Catherine and the Devil had a contest of strength here. The saint's stone landed upright, while the Devil's fell flat. Lord Dillon dug at the site, and it was excavated again in 1956. Morris men still dance at the stones on May Day morning.
