The Heart of Oak Club Walk

Once, the village's working men paid in so no one would starve. Every spring they still walk.

  • Living tradition

Flower-covered sticks, an oak bough cut that morning, and a band leading the whole village.

Each year, on a Saturday near Oak Apple Day, 29 May, the Fownhope Heart of Oak Society holds its Club Walk. The society began as a mutual friendly society, giving members money if they fell on hard times. Members and villagers carry sticks garlanded with flowers and greenery, some handed down through families. They follow the society banner, a freshly cut bough of oak and a band, parading from the pub to St Mary's Church for a short service, then around the village, stopping for refreshments, and finish with sports and family fun. In 2025 the walk was on 31 May, starting at the New Inn.
