Footsteps, voices and slamming doors drove a family from a Tudor manor.
Hinton Ampner, near Alresford, is now a National Trust house and garden. Its old Tudor house became notorious in the 18th century. Mary Ricketts, who lived there from 1765, wrote of loud noises, footsteps, voices and ghostly figures, especially after her husband left for Jamaica. Her brother, later Admiral Lord St Vincent, kept watch but could not explain them. In the end she gave up the lease and moved out. The old house was pulled down in 1793 and a new one built about 50 metres away. Harry Price later wrote about the case.
