Four people burned on a September day in 1556, and a village that still remembers with a carnival.

Every September Mayfield holds a carnival to remember the four Protestants burned at the stake there on 24 September 1556. They were burned on ground opposite what is now Colkins Mill Church in Station Road. The carnival is part of the Sussex bonfire tradition, and the four are also remembered at Lewes.
