Forestry England says the forest is open dawn to dusk daily except Christmas Day, with paid parking from £3.15 at Tangham (IP12 3NF). A waymarked UFO trail starts here.
Rendlesham Forest, December 1980. American airmen walked into these trees after strange lights. What they reported is still argued about.
Just after Christmas 1980, US Air Force security police at RAF Woodbridge saw lights apparently coming down into Rendlesham Forest. Thinking an aircraft had crashed, they went in and reported a glowing, metallic-looking object with coloured lights that moved through the trees. Next morning three small dents, burn marks and broken branches were found in a clearing. On another night the deputy base commander, Lieutenant Colonel Charles Halt, led a patrol, recorded what he saw on tape, and later sent a memo to the Ministry of Defence. Sceptics explain the lights as a fireball, the Orfordness lighthouse and bright stars. It is often called Britain's Roswell.
