Short steep climb from the National Trust White Horse Hill car park. Check before you go.
The dragon fell here. Its blood soaked the hilltop, and the grass has never grown back.
Below the Uffington White Horse sits Dragon Hill, a round mound about ten metres high with a strangely flat top. Local legend says this is where St George killed the dragon. On the summit is a bare patch of white chalk. The story says that is where the dragon's blood spilled. It was so poisonous that grass has never grown there since. The National Trust points out that St George never came near Uffington. It suggests the bare patch may come from high potash in the soil, perhaps left by ancient fires.
