When the Vaughans saw the black dog, they knew someone in the house would soon die.

Hergest Court, west of Kington below Hergest Ridge, was the home of the Vaughan family, who arrived there in 1422. Alongside the tale of Black Vaughan runs the story of his black dog, a companion of Thomas Vaughan said to have had its own room at the top of the house. The dog is said to have haunted generations of the family, appearing before them as a sign of imminent death. It is widely suggested that Arthur Conan Doyle drew on the tale for The Hound of the Baskervilles; the BBC says he stayed at Hergest Court, and the Kington History Society notes his wife's family came from nearby Clyro.
