The Lawless Court

Once a year, tenants gathered here in pitch darkness and spoke only in whispers. Their ancestors' crime was the reason.

Rochford ahead. Here, before dawn, tenants once whispered their names in the dark to punish an old murder plot.

Every year, on the Wednesday after Michaelmas, the tenants of the manor of King's Hill met in the dark before dawn for the Lawless Court. No lights were allowed, the steward wrote with a piece of charcoal, and everyone spoke in a whisper, so it was also called the Whispering or Cockcrowing Court. The story went that a lord, woken early by a crowing cock, overheard his tenants whispering a plot to murder him, and made them and their heirs meet at that hour forever as punishment. Anyone who missed the roll forfeited to the lord. The court began at Rayleigh and later moved to Rochford, where it was abolished late in the 1800s.
