Old bridge open to walkers; the manor is private. Check before you go.
A coach on the bridge that only Turbervilles can see.
Beside the old stone bridge at Wool stands Woolbridge Manor, once a Turberville house. A local legend says a phantom coach drives over the bridge at night, but only someone with Turberville blood can see it, and its appearance is said to foretell misfortune. Dorset Ancestors links one version to the elopement of John Turberville with Anne Howard of Bindon. Thomas Hardy used the manor and the coach in Tess of the d'Urbervilles, where Tess spends her wedding night. The bridge is now closed to cars.
