An old church bell, a village witch, and a river that swallowed it.

A Victorian ballad given by Royal Berkshire History tells of Kintbury church and its huge old bell. People blamed the bell for every misfortune, and it was whispered that the bell was bewitched by an old woman who lived in a cottage nearby. In a great storm the ivy-covered tower fell, and the cursed bell rolled down into the River Kennet and sank deep into the mud. There, says the ballad, it still lies, and you must pull it out if you want it back. No other fetched source repeats the tale.
